A small, tightly framed portrait of a young woman sealed inside a daguerreotype case, dated 1862, shows how these pictures were meant to be held rather than hung. The daguerreotype process, announced in 1839, produced a single positive image on a silvered copper plate, and by the 1860s it was giving way to paper prints and glass negatives, though cased portraits like this one remained popular with families. The hinged case, often lined with velvet and pressed paper, protected the fragile surface, and the image only appears clearly when tilted at the right angle against the light. Its mirror-like sheen, which can show the viewer's own reflection, is one of the qualities worth noticing in person.
