Oakland, California, in 1900 was a city of about 67,000 people on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, and its waterfront was the western end of the transcontinental railroad. Southern Pacific trains ran to the Oakland Mole, where passengers and freight transferred to ferries bound for San Francisco, so the port, the rail yards and the warehouses along the estuary drove much of the local economy. Lake Merritt, a tidal lagoon the city had begun to shape into a park, was a favorite place for Sunday outings, and the streetcar lines reaching out from downtown carried workers to new houses in the hills and flats. Residents of that day knew Oakland as a commuter suburb and working port with its own civic life, with a mayor and council, a daily press and a growing number of churches and schools.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Oakland, California, drawn in 1900. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
