Los Angeles in 1909 was a city of close to 300,000 people, having roughly tripled in population since 1900, and the downtown blocks drawn here held the hotels, banks and wholesale houses that served that growth. That year the city annexed the harbor communities of San Pedro and Wilmington, which put the port that residents had argued over for years under Los Angeles control and tied the city's future more firmly to Pacific shipping. Citrus packing houses and the rail lines that carried oranges east remained the backbone of the regional economy, while the city council and the local press debated paving, streetcar extensions and the growing number of automobiles on streets laid out for horses. Many residents also knew their city as a magnet for newcomers from the Midwest, drawn by the mild winters that boosters promoted across the country.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Los Angeles, California, drawn in 1909. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
