Published around 1844, "The Prize Song, The Whig Chief" is a music title page dedicated to Henry Clay, the Whig candidate for president that year. Its colored lithograph was made by the Boston firm B. W. Thayer & Co., and the copyright was registered to E. H. Wade. Sheet music like this was a common way for supporters to show their allegiance during the 1844 campaign, when Clay lost to James K. Polk. The cover pairs a campaign tune with a portrait-style tribute, which makes it a useful record of how party loyalty was expressed in print and song.
