Taken in Loomis, a small community in the Okanogan country of north-central Washington, this photograph shows riders on horseback under the title "Indian cowboys." The catalog dates it only to about 190-, so the exact year is uncertain, but the early twentieth century was a time when ranching and horse work were central to the economy of the region. Many Native men in the Pacific Northwest worked as stockmen, packers and riders, and their horsemanship was essential to ranch life. The title's wording reflects the language of its era and is worth reading with that context in mind.
