This glass negative shows a man named in the record only as Harrison, posed with a banjo. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded, and the Library of Congress notes that it has not been verified. George Grantham Bain ran one of New York's early news photo agencies, supplying newspapers with pictures of public figures, performers, and current events in the early decades of the twentieth century. The banjo was a staple of vaudeville, minstrel-derived stage acts, and popular dance bands of that period, so a posed picture of a musician would have been useful to editors looking for entertainment images. Without a firm date or further identification, the sitter's profession and the picture's purpose remain largely inference.
