The Majestic Theater stood in Alto, a small town in Cherokee County in East Texas, and this photographic print comes from a period between 1900 and 1930. Those decades saw many small American towns build their own theaters, which offered vaudeville acts, traveling shows, and, increasingly, motion pictures. The record does not name the photographer, so the scene is best read as a window onto how a rural community gathered for entertainment before television. Notice the building's facade and street setting, which show how such theaters presented themselves to passersby.
