The keys in this picture are shown close enough that the lettering on each one stands out, and the shift key is the detail that draws the eye. Shift keys were a key innovation of the typewriter: pressing one raised the type bar so a single letter could strike the page in capitals or in the upper symbol of a two-character key, rather than requiring a separate lever for each character. That small mechanical change let a typist switch between upper and lower case without changing the whole machine's layout, and it became standard on nearly every typewriter that followed. For writers and clerks of the late 19th and 20th centuries, that worn lever and its neighboring keys were the daily tools of composition.
