A Fourth of July parade is the subject here, though the record gives no date or location, so the scene has to be read from the negative itself. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Independence Day parades were a staple of American town life then, with marching bands, civic groups and flag-decked streets drawing crowds to the main road. The Bain archive is valued today as a record of everyday public life of that era.
