The record gives a bare title, "July 4th parade," with no place, year, or named participants, so this glass negative is best understood through the collection it belongs to. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, built from the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sent photographers out to cover news events and sold the pictures to newspapers. Bain's operation ran in the early twentieth century, and its negatives capture street life, public ceremonies, and civic celebrations of that era. Independence Day parades in American cities of this period drew crowds, marching bands, and floats, and the glass plates preserve how those gatherings looked before routine newspaper photography became common.
