A pencil drawing dated June 17, 1864, and titled "Beefsteak rare, near Petersburg, Va.," shows a Union camp in Virginia just as the armies were settling into the long siege of that city. The title points to a routine camp task, cooking beef over open fires, which soldiers often had to improvise with whatever rations and tools they had. The drawing is one of a group of Civil War sketches from the 1860s, and its missing corners and damage in the lower right remind viewers how fragile wartime works on paper can be.
