Titled "Life preserver," this lithograph from around 1856 casts a German-language cookbook as a rescue for the housewife, and its caption announces that all five of John Weik's Kochbücher are available here. Philadelphia's large German-speaking community made such books practical aids for cooking familiar dishes in a new country. Drawn on stone by J. Nissle and printed by Herline & Co., the advertisement shows how lithography was used for eye-catching commercial display in the 1850s.
