A ship's smokestack is the detail this poster turns into a warning: the plume that marks a vessel's passage can give its position away to an enemy submarine. The WPA Art Project produced the silkscreen in Washington around 1940 or 1941, as the country moved toward war and coastal shipping grew more exposed. Japanese submarines did attack merchant ships off California in December 1941, which gave the poster's caution real urgency. Its bold color and simple, direct design were typical of the WPA's wartime work.
