Assateague Lighthouse stands on the Virginia barrier island that shares its name, guarding the Chincoteague Inlet along the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Lighthouses on this stretch of shore were built to warn mariners away from shifting sandbars and the many wrecks they caused, and the island's exposed beaches made navigation here especially treacherous. Worth noticing in a picture like this is the tower's slender profile against open sky and sand, a reminder of how isolated such stations once were.
