The title on this glass negative is simply "Kremer," a surname that Bain News Service staff recorded on the negative or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that the name is unverified, so the subject's identity and the occasion behind the picture remain uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo service in New York in 1899, and it supplied pictures of public figures, events, and everyday news to newspapers. Its glass negatives, made before flexible film became standard, are valued today as a record of how press photographers worked in the early twentieth century.
