Women working the fields were a familiar sight on many American farms during the mid-twentieth century, when labor shortages and wartime demand pulled large numbers of women into agricultural work. Here, a crew is hauling crop stalks up onto a tractor-drawn trailer, a job that was heavy, dusty and done by hand before mechanized harvesting took over. The tractor and trailer at the edge of the scene show how closely the human labor and the new machinery were tied together on the farm. Notice how the workers' posture and the loaded stalks convey the physical effort the task demanded.
