A tractor hauling two wagons along a dirt farm road makes for a scene that changed rural life across the 20th century. By the time many of these photographs were taken, the tractor had largely replaced draft horses and mules for field work and hauling, letting a single operator move loads that once took a team and several hands. Wagons trailing behind a tractor were a common sight at harvest, carrying grain, hay, or livestock feed between fields and barns. Notice the rutted road and open land, which show how much of farm work depended on these routes and how quickly mechanization reshaped them.
