A baseball tied to an 1883 patent and a Patent Office official named S.D. Castle anchor this 1925 glass negative from the National Photo Company. The title comes from information the company wrote on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the link between ball and official should be read with that caveat. The company, based in Washington, produced many pictures of government offices, objects and people for newspapers during these decades. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass are the natural result of aging coatings, as the record notes.
