The Plaza theater on Fairfield Avenue, near Bridgeport's railroad station, was also known as Poli's theater, and this ink drawing records the building from 1920. Sylvester Z. Poli ran a vaudeville and film circuit across Connecticut and neighboring New England states, and his houses drew audiences from the city's busy streets and rail traffic. The drawing dates from a period when motion pictures were rapidly replacing live vaudeville as the main draw in American theaters, which makes a 1920 plan of a combined house especially useful for studying how such venues were laid out.
