Thomas W. Nason's *Summer Storm* puts the sky at the center of the scene, with heavy clouds massing over the land and light breaking through in patches. Nason made it in 1940 as a chiaroscuro wood engraving, a method that builds light and shadow from several blocks rather than from line alone. The print is signed and dated in pencil and was issued in an edition of 90, so each impression was pulled by hand. Its stormy sky gives summer a moodier, more dramatic face than the sunny season usually gets.
