Part of the firm's Four Seasons series, this lithograph of Summer bears the Currier & Ives imprint and a date of about 1871, when the New York firm was producing colored scenes for a broad middle-class market. Its color was added by hand after printing, a labor-intensive step that gave each sheet slight differences in tone. The Gale Research catalog raisonné lists it as number 6316, a useful reference for tracing the series. Seasonal scenes like this one were popular home decorations of the period, prized for their cheerful, sentimental view of rural life.
