A water wagon hauling its load through the streets of Bijapur, a city on the Deccan plateau in southern India, is the subject here. Bijapur is best known for its 17th-century Adil Shahi monuments, including the vast dome of the Gol Gumbaz. Water carts like this one were a common sight in Indian towns of the period, where piped supply was limited and carts served households, markets and dusty roads. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, made the glass negative, but the title and place come from caption cards that have not been independently verified, and the exact date is unknown.
