Mount Abu, a hill station in the Aravalli range of Rajasthan in western India, is the setting for this view of a sakieh, the animal-driven water wheel used to lift water from wells for irrigation. Oxen typically walked a circular path to turn the gearing, which brought up a chain of pots, a method common across India and the wider Middle East for centuries. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose glass negatives cover a wide range of world scenes. The title on the record is unverified, and the date and exact circumstances of the photograph are not known.
