The Balsam Mountains take their name from the Fraser fir, a tree that thrives in the high, cool ridges of the southern Appalachians and gives these peaks their dark, evergreen cast. The range forms part of the high country that the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through along the crest of the mountains in North Carolina. Drawings of this stretch often aim to capture the long, rolling profiles of the ridges and the way the forest climbs and thins toward the summits. Looking at this one, notice how the artist handles the layered distance, a tradition that suits a landscape so shaped by its elevation.
