The subject is a Wellesley thoracimeter, an instrument used to measure chest size and breathing capacity, which shows that this picture is about the measuring of bodies as much as the college itself. Physical educators at women's colleges in the late 1800s and early 1900s often recorded students' posture, lung capacity and chest expansion as part of early fitness programs. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active from about 1899 into the 1920s, made many such pictures for newspapers and magazines. The record gives no date or photographer, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
