This glass negative records a portrait of Joseph Hodges Choate, the New York lawyer who became one of the best-known American advocates of his era and later served as ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1899 to 1905. The title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its cards, and the library has not verified it, so the sitter's identity rests on that original labeling. Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, so images like this one show how prominent men were presented to the press in the early twentieth century.
