A yellow rose, a small bell, and a dragonfly set this fairy apart from the other winged figures on the board, and together they tie her to the garden and the summer air. Fairy illustrations like this were especially popular in Victorian and Edwardian Britain and America, where they appeared in children's books, greeting cards, and decorative prints. Artists of the period drew on folklore and close observation of flowers and insects to make these small beings feel believable. Notice how the wings and the flower are rendered with care, a blend of fantasy and natural detail typical of the genre.
