Canterbury bells, the tall garden campanula, give this picture its name, and the flower's bell-shaped blossoms are the clear model for the fairy's pale dress and cap. The title fits the Flower Fairies illustrations that Cicely Mary Barker began publishing in the 1920s, in which each small winged figure was built from close study of a particular plant. The flower's common name is often traced to the bells that pilgrims' horses wore on the road to Canterbury, though that origin is folklore rather than documented fact. Placed among angels and fairies, the picture shows how a fairy figure could carry a gentle, devotional feeling about the natural world.
