Here a small winged figure in the Canterbury bell is set out again and again across the sheet, so the repetition turns a single flower spirit into a decorative field. The name of the flower is often traced to the pilgrims who rode to Canterbury, whose horses were said to jingle with bells, a folk explanation that links the blossom to travel and devotion. Flower fairies like this one became popular in British children's illustration in the early twentieth century, when artists paired each bloom with a tiny character. The mix of botany, folklore and sentiment made such images a staple of nursery and parlor decoration.
