A timber-framed house in Bacharach, a wine town on the Middle Rhine in western Germany, is the subject here. The town's old streets are lined with half-timbered dwellings whose upper stories lean over narrow lanes, and this color print shows one of them as a fixed picture of local domestic architecture. The Heidelberg publisher Edm. von König issued it, and the work is credited to C. Pfaff. Printed in color during the decades before 1920, it reflects a period when travelers and collectors prized such scenes of Germany's medieval towns.
