Urging farmers and poultry keepers to thin their flocks, this 1917 color lithograph is a wartime food poster issued by the New York State Food Supply Commission. The United States entered World War I that April, and officials worried that feed grain shipped to Europe and used at home would grow scarce and expensive. Culling unproductive hens, meaning removing the birds that laid poorly, saved feed while keeping the best layers for eggs and meat. The poster's blunt "Hurry!!" reflects how urgent the campaign was framed as being, and it is a useful example of how civilian food conservation was pitched to rural households.
