Baltimore's wholesale markets were where produce, meat, and other goods changed hands before reaching the city's grocers and retail stalls. The record names only the city and the trade, not a specific building or date, so the scene is best read as typical of the working markets that fed a growing Baltimore in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those markets were busiest in the early morning, when farmers, dealers, and buyers haggled over loads that arrived by wagon and, later, by truck. Look at the crates, wagons, and crowded stalls for clues about how food moved through the city before refrigeration and motor freight reshaped the trade.
