The courthouse in El Dorado, the seat of Union County in south Arkansas, is the focus of this view, though the caption card gives no date for it. El Dorado changed quickly after oil was struck in the nearby Smackover field in 1921, when a town known mainly for timber and farming became a center of drilling, investment, and new building. County courthouse photographs like this one were often collected as a record of local public architecture, so the building's design and its setting are the details worth studying.
