Fowey Rocks Light stands on a shallow reef several miles off the Florida coast, south of Miami, far from the shoreline it was built to serve. Its position made it a key marker for ships approaching Biscayne Bay and the busy sea lanes along the Florida Keys. Completed in the late 1870s, it used an open iron framework set on the reef, a common answer to lighting dangerous water where no solid island could hold a station. The lattice design is worth noticing, since it let wind and waves pass through the structure instead of pushing against it as hard as a solid tower would.
