Rows of children sit at their wooden desks in this Washington, D.C. classroom, captured in a cyanotype, a blueprint-style process that produces the distinctive blue-and-white tones seen here. The image comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's collection and is catalogued as part of an album of her work, with the date given as about 1899. Johnston, one of the first American women to build a career as a professional photographer, turned her camera to the city's public schools around that time, when schooling and reform were major topics in the nation's capital. Her pictures offer a close look at the furniture, the crowded seating, and the everyday routines of turn-of-the-century education.
