California poppies fill the foreground of this 1899 view, their orange blooms spilling across the frame in a way that suggests the photographer wanted the flowers, not the landscape, to carry the picture. The print comes from the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm that became known in the 1890s for its Photochrom process, which produced color images by hand-registered lithographic stones. Its catalog leaned heavily on western scenery and botanical subjects, and wildflowers from California were especially popular with eastern buyers who had never seen the state's spring hillsides. Look closely at the soft tonal gradations, which show how the process rendered the poppies' petals with more subtlety than a single flat color would allow.
