Close enough to show the crinkled, satin-like petals of the California poppy, *Eschscholzia californica*, this 1925 stereograph card brings the state's orange wildflower into sharp, layered view. The print is hand-colored and was issued by George E. Stone, a producer of educational motion pictures and stereographs. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave a sense of depth, a format popular in classrooms and parlors in the 1920s. The California poppy had been named the state flower in 1903, and it remains one of the most recognizable emblems of California.
