Larry Rivers, the painter and collagist known for his loose, gestural figuration, brought his hand to this promotional poster for the Metropolitan Opera's production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Printed in color by the Circle Gallery in New York around 1978, the poster ties a 19th-century Japanese-set tragedy to the Met's late-1970s season, when the house was promoting its standing repertory to a wide audience. Rivers's design departs from the stiff illustration typical of opera advertising, and it is worth noticing how a Pop-adjacent artist of his generation approached a century-old story of cultural misunderstanding and abandonment.
