Scio, a village in Harrison County in eastern Ohio, sat in 1899 among the farm communities and small coal-mining settlements scattered through the county's hills. Harrison County's economy rested on corn, wheat, livestock, and the coal seams that employed many men in the surrounding townships, while the county seat at Cadiz handled much of the legal and commercial business for the region. Local farmers and miners sent their goods to river markets such as Steubenville and Wheeling and bought supplies there in return. Villages like Scio also lost many young people to the growing industrial cities of the Ohio Valley, so churches, schools, and lodges carried much of the community's social life.
