In 1899, Canal Dover sat on the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County, in east-central Ohio, a town that took its name from the Ohio and Erie Canal that once ran through its center. By the late 1890s the canal's freight role had been largely overtaken by railroads, which carried the coal, grain, and manufactured goods that had once moved by mule-drawn barge. Local life in the valley still revolved around its mills, shops, and churches, and the town's streets and river frontage show a community that was adjusting to that shift. Canal Dover was a small city whose residents would have known it as a county trading center more than as a canal port.
