Cambridge, the seat of Guernsey County in east-central Ohio, was a town of glassworks, coal mines, and farms in 1899. Its factories drew on the natural gas and cheap fuel that made the region attractive to glass manufacturers in the 1880s and 1890s, and the town's streets carried a steady traffic of workers, shippers, and county business. The National Road, the old federal highway that ran west from Cumberland, Maryland, passed through the county, linking Cambridge to older trade routes even as railroads had by then taken over most freight. Residents of the period would have known Cambridge as a county seat with courthouse politics, churches, and schools, and as a place where the glass trade and the mines shaped daily life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Cambridge, Ohio, drawn in 1899. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
