The name "A.T. Rogers" is the only identifying detail on this glass negative, and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter, place, and date remain uncertain. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded in 1899 that sold news pictures to newspapers. The collection holds tens of thousands of small glass negatives from the early twentieth century, and their size and format reflect the fast, portable cameras that press photographers used at the time.
