This studio portrait shows a man identified as the Honorable Gordon N. Mott, a title usually reserved for officeholders or legislators of the period. It dates to 1855, when photographic portraits were becoming a common way for public men to present themselves to the public. The image belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, the body of work produced by Mathew Brady's studio and its successor, Levin Handy, in Washington. Those glass-plate portraits form one of the most important visual records of mid-19th-century American political life, and they are valued today for their sharp detail and the sitters' formal, composed poses.
