Solomon Foot was a Vermont lawyer who represented his state in the U.S. Senate, and this 1865 portrait shows him during the last years of the Civil War, when Congress was debating how the Union would be reconstructed. The photograph belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, a body of studio portraits of nineteenth-century political, military and cultural figures, most made in Washington. Taken in the same period as many of its companion images, it offers a useful view of how legislators presented themselves to the public at a time when photographs were becoming a common way to put a face to a name.
