Few men in the Brady-Handy studio's Washington portraits sat for the camera with as much wit as Kentucky's James Proctor Knott, who later became known in the House for humorous speeches that could puncture a dull debate. This portrait belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, the body of studio work made by Mathew Brady and Levin Handy in Washington, which records many of the lawmakers, officers, and public figures of the Civil War and Reconstruction years. Brady's studio favored formal, carefully lit head-and-shoulders portraits, and the sitter's expression and dress here reflect the conventions of that period. Because the record gives only a limited date and no caption details, the portrait is best read as a document of a political career in its early stages, one that would later carry Knott to the governorship of Kentucky.
