A returning soldier and a waiting couple set the scene in *The soldier's return*, a hand-colored lithograph published in New York by J. Baillie around 1847. The date falls during the Mexican-American War, which sent many young American men away from home, so a homecoming image would have struck viewers with real emotional force. Prints like this were made for a broad market and colored by hand, turning a moment of war into a scene of domestic reunion that families could hang on their walls.
