The title of this Currier & Ives lithograph, *The stolen interview*, suggests a snatched moment of private conversation, the kind of playful courtship scene the New York firm issued in quantity around 1872. Like most of its genre subjects, the print was drawn and printed in black and white and then colored by hand, so surviving copies vary in tone and care. Sentimental and humorous scenes of romance found a ready market among middle-class buyers, who often displayed them at home. The Gale Research catalog raisonné records it as number 6268.
