Here the subject is a proposal of marriage, the moment that the slang phrase "popping the question" describes. Sarony & Major, a New York lithography firm, issued this colored sheet around 1846, and the firm produced many genre scenes of courtship and everyday humor for a broad middle-class market. Color lithographs like this were affordable enough to hang in parlors, and courtship scenes suited both sentimental and comic prints. The record also carries the number 13, which may mark it as part of a numbered set.
