May Peterson is the sitter here, a stage actress whose name appears on the glass negative's title, though the Library of Congress notes that the identification comes from caption information supplied by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs made and distributed by Bain's agency in New York from the early 1900s into the 1910s. Peterson was a Broadway performer of that era, and portraits like this one reflect how theatrical personalities were photographed and circulated to newspapers and magazines.
