Carl Vrooman is the name recorded for the sitter, though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified Bain News Service data on the negative or its caption card. Vrooman served as assistant secretary of agriculture under Woodrow Wilson in the 1910s, a period when the federal government was widening its role in farming and rural life. Bain News Service was a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, so portraits like this were made to run alongside stories of the day. The small glass negative format was standard for that kind of press work.
